19: Elders’ Secret

More than the dome experts arrived aboard the traveler that unloaded passengers and gear in front of the building.

Passersby watched SADEs, a Crocian, and a pair of New Terrans march across the plaza. The latter individuals carried equipment.

Inside, Minimalist, Luther, and Morgoth made for Iltaft’s location via her bio ID.

The heavy-worlder New Terrans rode the elevator to the top floor, and they sought the exit to the roof. Then they worked to install a comm link system for the building’s use.

When Iltaft’s guests were seated, she sent, <Wymron was agitated by the question about the origin of the QASAP ships. I received a link to numerous data files. According to Wymron, this link will delete within one cycle. Also, we can’t make copies of the files.>

Iltaft regarded the SADEs. <Perhaps, that’s something that SADEs can overcome, but I request you never try,> she urged.

<Your request will be honored, Representative Iltaft, to the best of our ability,> Luther replied.

Iltaft shook her head in chagrin. What she’d requested was nonsense. With implants and kernels, Quellers’ efforts to control information were antiquated.

<All of us must understand what’s at stake,> Iltaft continued. <Quellers have kept a secret. Perhaps today, it’s only known to the senior elder. We must allow Wymron the opportunity to reveal to the citizens what we learn today.>

<Better phrased, Representative,> Morgoth sent.

<How is it best to do this?> Iltaft asked, hoisting her device.

Minimalist extended a hand, and Iltaft gave him her device. He found her recent message from Wymron. Then he linked to the table projection system. Following the message link, he transmitted the first file to the table.

Not knowing what other security protections might be tripped, the audience was silent while the files revealed themselves.

When the last file was retrieved and viewed, Minimalist returned the device.

Iltaft noted the message envelope was there, but the link was gone. She gazed at the junior elders, <One time viewing,> she shared.

<That was educational,> Lemtaca sent, indicating the table’s projection system, which was now blank.

<Amazing what you don’t know about your own history,> Ergatisa sent, repeating his previous lament.

<So, anomalies were discovered before the one leading to Axis Crossing worlds,> Iltaft sent.

<According to the data, probes were developed to peek on the other side of the first detected anomaly,> Luther shared. <This technique was reported to us via Samuel’s observations while he was on Naiad.>

<I can understand the Quellers’ concerns,> Morgoth sent. <The recordings of that level of activity on the other side of the anomaly would have frightened an isolationist society.>

<The timing of that recording is many annuals before the launch of the first QASAP ship,> Minimalist noted. <The discovery doesn’t seem to link directly to the QASAP ships’ construction. Could there be some other event that instigated their creation?>

<Unknown,> Iltaft replied, wondering what else she didn’t know.

<Iltaft, I think you need to make a second visit to Wymron,> Morgoth pressed. <I understand that the QASAP ships built huge capacitive engines to destabilize the anomalies. However, I would like to know
